These Victorian Village residents always dreamed of finishing the third floor of their late 1800’s Victorian home. With over 1400 square feet of floor space and dynamic ceiling lines, who wouldn’t want to convert this attic into a finished living area? The plan for this space was to transform it into a master bedroom suite complete with a bedroom, closet, bathroom, sitting area, and workout space.
Keep in mind, many older homes have large attics like this, but most were not intended on being finished, especially with today’s building requirements. For this project, we needed to rebuild the entire floor system as well as reinforce the roof structure to handle the new load of the finished space.
The interior design is a clear departure from standard Victorian finishes. With high vaulted ceilings and exposed duct work throughout the space, this master suite has more of a modern loft feel. Hardwood floors run throughout most of the living space, and tile is in the bathroom. Sliding barn doors cover storage areas and refrigeration needs, while a custom iron railing adds to the modern decor.
Stunning hand-distressed eucalyptus wood flooring provides warmth and durability, plus the Eco benefits of using a renewable material. The knots of the eucalyptus tree give this floor a beautiful and sophisticated look that will last for years to come. We chose five-inch wide planks to complement the modern style of the room, and a deep, warm shade of brown to play off the neutral wall color.
We painted the sliding barn doors white and installed accent cable lights that feature adjustable heads that can tilt and rotate between the cables. Cylinder pendant lights flank either side of the bed and hang just above each glass-topped silver side table.
The shower has extra-large (12” X 24”) light gray tile on the walls and small (1” X 2”) gray and black mosaic tiles on the floor. A built-in shelf provides room for shampoos and soaps, while a floating bench offers a place to sit and enjoy the steam. An overhead rainfall showerhead, a detachable wall-mounted showerhead, and a modern deep soaker tub give the homeowners all the bathing options they desire.
The gorgeous white marble countertop is a sharp contrast to the dark wood bathroom cabinets. Modern faucets overlook square sinks, while three contemporary wall sconces are mounted to the mirror. Even the door has a modern edge, literally, with a necessary notch cut into the top corner to accommodate the vaulted ceiling.
We created a convenient space for our clients to work out in the comfort of their own home. A big screen TV and speakers were mounted on the wall so the homeowners can watch their favorite shows or listen to music during their workouts.
Our clients are avid readers so they wanted a separate place to quietly sit and read. We found the perfect little nook that had a window with a view of the street. Custom recessed book shelves, installed on either side of two cozy armchairs, ensure their favorite books are always within reach.
Our clients now have a place to retreat from the busy daily grind. With an area to workout, as well as a place to relax with a good book, they have everything they need to start – and end – a great day.
